tick... tick... Boom!

This was a Monday night watch with Sarah in Mexico.

What I liked:

Andrew Garfield's performance was really good. He plays Jonathan Larson at a very pressure-packed juncture in his life. Larson is trying to get his play Superbia out to Broadway and is missing key components in the musical and kind of in his life as well. He doesn't have enough time for every person and everything in his life. His apartment's a mess and he's on the verge of having the electricity disconnected. Really enjoyed Garfield as the anchor or center of the movie.

There were some really good and funny songs as well that show Larson's knack for writing songs that are relatable to his generation. The rest of the cast (and cameos) were really good.

What I didn't like:

Sometimes I find myself exhausted after musicals, and this one was no exception. I liked the songs, but the movie's a bit frantic in spots. There's a scene where Jonathan and his girlfriend Susan are having a fight because she needs an answer about moving for a job and it's accompanied by a kind of obnoxious on-stage bit that I felt took away from the moment.

What I Need To Work On

Short fuse. I need to realize that Levi is four and not a grown person. He's going to hit because he doesn't know how to deal with frustration, and frustration is people saying no.

Communication with Sarah. Our personalities honestly don't mesh all that well. I'm going to learn to swallow my tongue and not read her face and just move on.

Following through with things. I have to get better with doing what I say I'm going to do.

What I Am Thankful For

Dune

I didn't think a whole lot of Dune. I fell asleep three times and felt like I didn't miss anything since the pacing was so deliberate.

Yawn.

Let's Blog!

Put on our red shoes and write the blues...

Oh hello.

Today I blog about frustration. Frustration about how another weekend went. I felt frustrated because I left the house yesterday for exactly 45 minutes while Sarah was in and out until 4. She also called something I did "idiotic". Refilling a dish soap container after she'd put some water in it. Idiotic was the word.

I'm sorry- idiotic? Like using the wrong kind of dish soap to begin with, which left a soapy film on the dishes? Idiotic- like not putting the car in park when applying your registration sticker? Idiotic- like signing up for a service that costs $1000 without consulting your husband? I don't call mistakes idiotic. They're mistakes and proof that we're human.

But it's a pattern of disrespect that throws distance between us. How many times must I hear about being at the same company for 15 years because of a lack of ambition? I'm not unemployed. Sorry I'm not an engineer or physical therapist. I went to school for teaching, but I don't think you'd want me not watching the kids because I have to grade papers.

Ugh.

Anyway, terrible weekend. Tragedy in Waukesha at their parade. What kind of a person drives their car through a parade?

Kids drove me nuts. I am tired of being a snack dispenser. Pretty soon Levi's going to learn that I'm just going to say no snacks for an hour.

It has been a while since I picked out the tunes myself for a playlist. I did the random thing, but it seemed gimmicky after a couple of times. So I decided to create a playlist with all the songs from my favorite artists and some other stuff. This way, I can just pick off a list instead of wracking my brain every time. The result was really good, I think.

The only new one was Bum's Rush from Bela Fleck and guests. There's a little holiday flair with Skating and My Favorite Things.

Reading Update

Had to return Crossroads by Franzen because there were holds.

Overall impression:

Took me a long time to get into it because Franzen decided to give each character a long section of exposition with lots of description. Once the action gets going, it's a fast and compelling read.

Starting Hell of A Book, which was a gift from my brother and apparently just won a major award.

Listening to this book as well. Really enjoying it being my companion for commutes. So far, there's lot of stuff that I didn't know about Magic, Kareem, and the Lakers

Georgia Blue (Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit)

This is a fundraising album apparently, and a chance for Isbell to branch out. Most of it is dull, some of it is awful (I'm Through), and some of it pointless (really? I'm going to listen more than once to this version of Midnight Train to Georgia). Hopefully it raises some money, but I'm going to try to forget it exists.

Ballpark Boys- New Podcast

 Started listening to this today:

Walking

Good lunchtime walk after chili today. Listening to Leon Bridges on a walk outside, my first in a long time. Not since Steve left, but a while nonetheless. Chili cook-off today. While the office isn't ever going to be normal again, I loved having something like this. And walking it off outside with music put me in a much better mood. My foot finally feels a bit better.

So good that I'm going to Chicago by myself next month. Taking a full day off to go down there, maybe see a couple sights and see a play before coming back the next day at noon-ish. I can't wait to step on that train and only have to worry about myself for a night.

I love my life, honestly. I feel like I'm more present in the last few days and not overreacting to either S or the kids. Levi's waking up at 7 on the dot, which kind of takes some of my morning relaxation, but that's OK. Tomorrow I get the whole day to myself at home. I think the only thing that would make that better is if I could swim at Innovative, but I'll give the Y a try.

Planet Earth (Dennis Chambers)

I really did like a lot of the first half of this album. While the second half didn't fall of a cliff, it wasn't quite as good. I'll listen to more DC.

Music For All Occasions (The Mavericks)

Nothing to write home about here. Everything after Mono has been a snooze for the Mavericks, and this one early in their catalog was pretty sleepy too. Is that just what they are? I don't really feel the need to listen to more right away.
