tick... tick... Boom!

This was a Monday night watch with Sarah in Mexico.

What I liked:

Andrew Garfield's performance was really good. He plays Jonathan Larson at a very pressure-packed juncture in his life. Larson is trying to get his play Superbia out to Broadway and is missing key components in the musical and kind of in his life as well. He doesn't have enough time for every person and everything in his life. His apartment's a mess and he's on the verge of having the electricity disconnected. Really enjoyed Garfield as the anchor or center of the movie.

There were some really good and funny songs as well that show Larson's knack for writing songs that are relatable to his generation. The rest of the cast (and cameos) were really good.

What I didn't like:

Sometimes I find myself exhausted after musicals, and this one was no exception. I liked the songs, but the movie's a bit frantic in spots. There's a scene where Jonathan and his girlfriend Susan are having a fight because she needs an answer about moving for a job and it's accompanied by a kind of obnoxious on-stage bit that I felt took away from the moment.
