OOTP- Champion of the Day 1962- St Louis Cardinals over Chicago White Sox

I love the OOTP series, and I think any day I'm home I'm going to do the champion of the day. Could be a historical replay or a custom league I set up. Might expand it out into different sports. For some reason, the year 1962 leaps out to me, so I'm going to do 1962 today. Only difference will be possible in the league structure.

The regular season concludes with a 3 way tie for a wild card spot

St Louis only had to sweat the last inning of Game Four against the Chicago White Sox. It's a four game sweep!

Upcoming- My Bluegrass Heart (Bela Fleck and Guests)

In These Silent Days (Brandi Carlile)

What is your experience with Brandi Carlile's music?

I was introduced by my ex-wife, actually. She went to see Shawn Colvin with a friend and raved about the opening act, so I started listening to Brandi Carlile around when The Story came out.

I liked her first few albums a lot. They were acoustic-based, singer-songwriter Americana albums. I loved songs like "The Story and "Have You Ever" from The Story. Giving Up The Ghost offered more gems like "Dreams" and little treasures like "Oh Dear". Bear Creek continued along that path with a folksy sound.

The next two albums I just couldn't get into as much. The Firewatcher's Daughter came out right around when my mother died, so that's perhaps unfair to judge. By The Way, I Forgive You had some gems ("The Mother" may be my favorite song of hers just because of one line: "welcome to the end of being alone inside your mind"), but overall I didn't love it as much as her earlier work.

Where does In These Silent Days leave you as far as wanting to hear more of Brandi Carlile?

Like my Whitehead post, my criticism is only a reflection of my enjoyment. I didn't think the last two albums were bad; they were just a different direction. Artists need to do that, and it seems like there's a lot of identities for Carlile and her songs. In These Silent Days makes me curious and eager to hear what she does next. She gets back to those acoustic and folk roots with some stunning vocals and poignant lyrics. ITSD makes me want to buy a concert ticket, honestly.

Book Report- Harlem Shuffle

Did you have experience with Colson Whitehead before reading Harlem Shuffle?

Yes. My brother sent me his previous novel Nickel Boys, a novel about the horrors of a reform school in the South. I really enjoyed that book because the action just kept coming. The description seemed sparse to me, at least that's how I recall it. There were some horrific scenes that really illustrated the cruelty of that reform school.

How does Harlem Shuffle differ?

It took me a lot longer to really attach myself to Harlem Shuffle. I kind of went into it sight unseen. I liked Nickel Boys so much that I was willing to read whatever Whitehead put out next. The pacing of Harlem Shuffle is so much more deliberate. It's spaced out over years and there's a lot of description of the main character Ray Carney and his "associates".

What's your grade of Harlem Shuffle?

Keep in mind, this isn't a grade of the book, really, just my enjoyment of it. There's no doubt that it's a well-written novel. That's what kept me reading. Sometimes I read a book that doesn't hold my interest very well and the writing's kind of creaky. In this case, there were stretches that I enjoyed quite a bit. There were descriptions I really enjoyed. When I finished Harlem Shuffle, I wasn't disappointed that it was over. In fact, I needed to finish it so that I could start the next book. Out of five stars, I give it three. Well written, but took me too long to get hooked, and I can say I was never truly hooked.

Ex-Voto (Monocled Man)

Overall impression: Kind of liked the album. It didn't get too "far out" until the second to last track, which was kind of a snooze. This could be a good chill-out album.

Do I want to listen to more of this artist?

Not especially. I was curious about the name and read description online. It kind of intrigued me. There were some good moments on the album (mostly when there was no trumpet). I like melodic jazz or instrumental music, so this isn't in my wheelhouse, but it wasn't a total waste of time. I wound up marking 4/13 songs as liked.
